Hamilton Island, a Popular Queensland Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by US Investment Giant.

An iconic tropical holiday destination located on the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American investment group in a deal said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.

“We are honored to build on the legacy and commitment of the Oatley family has established in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.

The Reported Acquisition Agreement

The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending standard regulatory approvals.

The family issued a comment noting they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.

Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities

Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island spans more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.

Roughly thirty percent of the area is developed, featuring a substantial array of amenities:

  • Five hotels
  • Over twenty dining and drinking venues
  • 20 retail outlets
  • An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
  • A marina and a functioning airport

The resort is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsundays, supporting a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a wide network of local partners, suppliers, and local businesses.

Historical Context at The Island's History

The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.

The island's development boom first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to simple iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from the outback and from the south.

The Buyer's Other Holdings and Regional Background

Blackstone also owns luxury hotels and resorts in several nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.

The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
